Lightning arrester is a kind of equipment protected from lightning shock wave.
Lightning arrester is used to protect all kinds of electrical equipment in power system from lightning over-voltage, operation over-voltage, power frequency transient over-voltage impact.
The arrester is usually connected between the grid wire and the ground wire, but sometimes it is also connected beside the electrical winding or between the wires.
Three types Lighting arrester :
Type one: protection gap, mainly used to limit the atmospheric over-voltage, and is generally used for the protection of distribution system, line and incoming line section of substation.
Type two: valve type arrester, used for the protection of substations and power plants.
Type three: zinc oxide arrester, used for the protection of substations and power plants.
In UHV systems, they are also used to limit internal over-voltage or as backup protection for internal over-voltage.
